Enabling browser notifications on Windows and macOS

This guide explains how to turn on browser notifications for Novella on Windows and macOS so you can receive timely feedback and workspace alerts from your desktop.

Before you start

  • Make sure you are signed in to Novella in the browser where you want notifications.
  • Keep Novella open in at least one browser tab after enabling notifications.
  • Use a browser that supports web push notifications, such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari.
  • Confirm your organization does not block browser notifications with device management or security policies.

Enable notifications in Novella

  1. Open Novella in your preferred browser.
  2. Go to Settings → Notifications.
  3. Turn on the notification types you want to receive.
  4. If your browser asks for permission, choose Allow.
  5. Send or request a test notification if the option is available.

If you previously blocked notifications, update your browser and operating system settings using the steps below.

Windows: allow notifications from your browser

  1. Open Settings on your Windows device.
  2. Go to System → Notifications.
  3. Turn on Notifications.
  4. Scroll to the app list and make sure your browser is allowed to send notifications.
  5. Optional: review sound, banner, and priority settings for the browser.

If Do not disturb or Focus assist is turned on, Windows may suppress notification banners. Turn it off or adjust its automatic rules if you want alerts to appear immediately.

Windows: allow notifications for Novella in your browser

Use the steps for your browser:

Chrome or Edge

  1. Open Novella.
  2. Click the icon to the left of the address bar.
  3. Open Site settings or Permissions for this site.
  4. Set Notifications to Allow.
  5. Refresh Novella.

Firefox

  1. Open Novella.
  2. Click the permissions or lock icon to the left of the address bar.
  3. Find notification permissions.
  4. Remove the blocked permission or choose Allow.
  5. Refresh Novella.

macOS: allow notifications from your browser

  1. Open System Settings on your Mac.
  2. Go to Notifications.
  3. Select your browser in the app list.
  4. Turn on Allow notifications.
  5. Choose the alert style and whether notifications can play sounds or appear on the lock screen.

If Focus is enabled, macOS may hide notification banners. Open System Settings → Focus and adjust the active Focus mode if you want Novella alerts to appear right away.

  1. Open Novella.

Safari

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Go to Safari → Settings → Websites → Notifications.
  3. Find Novella in the website list.
  4. Set the permission to Allow.
  5. Refresh Novella.

Test notifications

After enabling permissions:

  1. Return to Settings → Notifications in Novella.
  2. Confirm the browser notification preferences you want are enabled.
  3. Trigger a test notification if available.
  4. Check that a desktop notification appears.

If the test works, future Novella notifications should appear according to your workspace and personal notification preferences.

Troubleshooting

I do not see a permission prompt

  • Check whether notifications are already blocked for Novella in your browser.
  • Refresh Novella and try again.
  • Sign out and sign back in, then revisit Settings → Notifications.
  • Confirm your browser supports web push notifications.

Notifications are allowed, but nothing appears

  • Make sure Windows Do not disturb, Windows Focus assist, or macOS Focus is not hiding alerts.
  • Confirm your browser is allowed to send notifications at the operating system level.
  • Keep Novella open in a browser tab.
  • Check your Novella notification preferences and make sure the relevant notification type is enabled.

Notifications appear in one browser but not another

Notification permissions are browser-specific. Repeat the browser permission steps in each browser where you want to receive Novella alerts.

I accidentally blocked notifications

Open your browser site permissions for Novella, change Notifications to Allow, then refresh Novella. If the browser still does not prompt you, remove the existing permission and try enabling notifications again from Settings → Notifications.

My company-managed device blocks notifications

Some organizations manage browser or operating system notification permissions. If the notification controls are disabled or keep reverting, contact your IT administrator.
